Public Transportation

Take the BART to the Downtown Berkeley station, then walk across the street to the area immediately in front of the Bank of America, where you can catch the UCB "P", "C" or "R" bus to the Hearst Mining Circle on campus, and there transfer to the"H" (Hill) bus to MSRI. For schedules please visit: http://pt.berkeley.edu/around/transit/routes. Bus travel time from Berkeley BART to MSRI is typically 30-45 minutes, and can be more during the middle of the day. The shuttle schedules change from time to time, and the bus does not run on weekends and UC Berkeley holidays. For current information, visit UCB Parking and Transportation.

Driving

From South, North, West (San Francisco): Get to the 80 (East or West), exit on University Avenue and drive away from the Bay. Follow University Avenue to its end. Turn left onto Oxford street, then right onto Hearst Avenue. At the second light, turn right onto Gayley Road (on the UCB campus). Take the first left onto Stadium Rim Way, and the first left onto Centennial Drive (which goes away from the Memorial stadium). Signs now indicate the direction of MSRI. Centennial Drive goes up up up, past the UC Botanical Garden, Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, and the Lawrence Hall of Science. Past the Lawrence Hall of Science, the road curves sharply right and up. MSRI's parking spaces are in the uppermost 2 rows of the parking lots after this curve. Please read the next section on Parking.

For deliveries and handicapped parking, stay on Centennial Drive until after the parking lots. Turn right onto the access road to MSRI/Space Sciences Lab (Gauss Way - but the sign is easy to miss since it's on the opposite side of the road as the turnoff). Drive between the two buildings and down to MSRI at the end of the road (about 250 yards/meters).

From the East: Take 24 West and exit at Fish Ranch Road. At the stop sign, turn right onto Fish Ranch Rd. Follow Fish Ranch up the hill to the stop sign and turn right onto Grizzly Peak Blvd. At the next stop sign (after 3 miles), turn left onto Centennial Drive. Drive down until you see the parking lots on your left about 200 yards/meters. MSRI's parking lot is the uppermost 2 rows. Please read the next section on Parking.

Parking

msri parking lot MSRI Permit Parking

The MSRI parking lot consists of the top two levels of the hill terrace parking. The lot is on the hill below the MSRI building off Centennial Drive. MSRI has a limited number of parking slots for members, staff, workshop participants and special events attendees. Due to the limited number of spaces, these parking spots tend to fill up quickly. Additional parking is available in the lower levels, for a fee. The UCB Police department patrols all of the lots and will ticket vehicles that are parked off the pavement or that do not have a visible permit. During workshops or special events, temporary parking permits to be displayed under the windshield are available for attendees in a box on the first stair landing towards MSRI.

There are three parking spaces directly in front of Chern Hall for anyone with a Disabled Person Parking Placard.

The parking spaces at the top of the driveway at MSRI are reserved for staff members and service providers. Please do not double park next to these spaces or along the cement wall.

UC Fee-Based Parking

After you park, take note of the parking space number, find a pay station and purchase your parking permit. The pay station is located near the traffic light in front of the Lawrence Hall of Science and it accepts quarters as well as one, five and ten dollar bills.

Space Sciences Lab

Before 5:00 p.m., parking at the Space Sciences Lab is for SSL employees only. After 5:00 p.m., no permit is required.
