- Abstract
Certain infinite variable polynomial rings equipped with actions of large groups (like the infinite symmetric group or the infinite general linear group) behave in many ways like finitely generated algebras; for instance, one sometimes has an "equivariant noetherian" property. I will discuss some deeper parallels with commutative algebra, and how these somewhat exotic objects can be applied to study classical questions.
