Support and Sponsors

  Federal Support
Founded in 1982 with the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) MSRI continues to receive major support from the NSF, in addition to partial funding by a number of government agencies.

  Foundation Support
The philanthropic support of numerous private foundations has been critical to the continued organizational vigor of MSRI as the Institute aims to diversify and expand its funding base. This key funding, alongside the contributions from individual donors, has brought MSRI to the achievement of a major milestone: a Capital Campaign that raised $10.5 million for building an addition and the renovation of the existing facility. MSRI gratefully acknowledges the vital and active role foundation support has played in the Institute’s success and endeavors on many fronts.

  Academic Sponsors
MSRI Academic Sponsors provide an important interface between the Institute and the mathematical community. Each of the eighty-one Academic Sponsor institutions is represented by a designate, frequently the Chair of the Mathematics Department, who participates in MSRI governance through the Committee of Academic Sponsors (CAS) to provide advise to the Institute on future plans and initiatives. The representative takes part (at Institute expense) in the annual CAS meeting and Sponsors Day held at MSRI in early March, alongside other sponsors and trustees. In addition, MSRI offers some financial backing of conferences at sponsoring institutions, as well as partial support to invite MSRI members to visit and give a colloquium or seminar talk at the sponsor institution. Moreover, only Academic Sponsors can send graduate students—up to three with costs assumed by the Insitute—to MSRI’s Summer Workshops.
